Get it right and the empty space in your layout will be the most hard working element on your page...
The most common fault with most design produced by amateurs is
the lack of
whitespace. It's the designers secret weapon. Less
is more. Spookily, whitespace does not have to be white and can be
the most important element on a page. Whitespace adds
sophistication and elegance, an uncluttered and fresh approach
however, getting whitespace right is not always easy.
There's a fine balance between whitespace, copy and images.
Inexperienced designers fall into the trap of thinking whitespace
is empty space and an opportunity missed in filling it with more
content about their product or services.
Whitespace is everywhere on a well balanced layout if you can
afford the luxury. It's large open spaces, it's the extra room
given between images and copy, it's the extra leading between the
lines of text. Whitespace works hard for you. Master it's
power and you are more than half way to achieving a great layout.
Check out the work we produced for White Knight. Their brochure is swimming
in white space. It's balanced, effective and enhances the content
around it.
